Biosecurity & Protecting Our Ecosystems
New Zealand’s ecosystems are unique and fragile.
Many native species exist nowhere else on earth.
Simple actions from visitors help protect these environments from invasive species and disease.
Why Biosecurity Matters
Seeds, soil and organic material carried on footwear or gear can spread:
Invasive weeds
Fungal diseases
Forest pathogens
Freshwater contaminants
These threats are often invisible — but their impact can be long-lasting.
Before You Arrive
Please ensure:
Hiking footwear is clean and free of soil.
No seeds or plant material are attached to clothing.
Pockets and bags are emptied of organic debris.
Gear has not recently been used in contaminated environments without cleaning.
If travelling between regions in New Zealand, cleaning footwear is especially important.
During the Walk
We:
Use designated cleaning stations where provided
Avoid moving off formed tracks in sensitive areas
Remind guests of biosecurity best practice
Your guide will advise if any additional precautions are required.
Equipment Hygiene
ECOTRAILS maintains equipment standards to prevent cross-contamination between locations.
Where required, footwear and gear are inspected and cleaned before departure.
Shared Responsibility
Biosecurity protection is a partnership between guides and guests.
By arriving prepared, you help preserve:
Native forests
Alpine environments
Freshwater systems
Rare plant communities
Small actions prevent large consequences.
