Planning a
Queenstown Eco Tour?
Below are answers to common questions about fitness levels, weather, small group sizes and what to expect on your experience with ECOTRAILS.
FAQ's
What makes ECOTRAILS different in Queenstown?
At ECOTRAILS, we encourage a slower, more mindful experience. We focus on small groups, giving you time to take in the land, watch for native wildlife, and enjoy relaxed moments. We don't rush, so you won't feel pressured. Our guides encourage questions and make sure every walk feels personal and connected to the area. It’s not about racing to the end—it’s about being present at every step.
What’s the difference between the two experiences?
We offer two nature walk experiences:
The Full-Day Nature Hike: A purposeful, full-day walk across varying terrain, with time to explore a wide range of natural environments.
The Half-day Nature walk: A gentler, slower-paced walk focused on native plants, textures, and seasonal changes.
Both are guided with the same care and intention — the difference is the length of the day and the depth of distance covered....
Will we see wildlife?
Possibly — but never guaranteed.
We don’t chase or track animals. Instead we walk quietly and allow natural behaviour to resume around us. This often results in more meaningful encounters than actively searching.
Do I need to clean my hiking boots?
Yes please — clean gear helps protect the track.
Seeds, soil and organic debris caught in boot treads can spread invasive weeds and plant diseases into fragile alpine environments.
Before arriving, please:
Brush dirt from your boots (especially the tread).
Remove seeds from laces and socks.
Make sure packs and gear are free of soil.
If needed, we can do a quick clean before departure.
Every clean pair of boots helps protect New Zealand’s wild places 🌿
Can I collect plants, rocks, or natural items?
No — everything stays exactly where it belongs. Even small removals accumulate over time and change the environment.
Do you leave the track at any point?
No — we remain on formed tracks and designated rest areas.
This protects fragile vegetation and reduces erosion. Some plants here can take decades to recover from a single footprint.
How does ECOTRAILS support conservation?
For every guest, we donate $1 to habitat restoration and predator control work through the NZ Nature Fund Routeburn project.
Small groups and low-impact guiding are also part of how we protect the places we visit.
How challenging are your nature walks?
The walking pace is moderate and suitable for most people with a good level of fitness. The track itself can be challenging, especially towards the alpine levels, where the track is narrower and steeper. It is suggested that a good level of fitness is required and appropriate footwear worn.
There is time to pause, rest, and move comfortably throughout the day.
If you have any concerns, feel free to contact us before booking.
What if people in our group have different fitness levels or interests?
Because ECOTRAILS operates with two guides, we’re able to tailor the pace and focus of the day to suit the group. This means guests can experience the landscape in a way that feels right for them, without feeling rushed or mismatched.
How physically fit do I need to be?
A reasonable level of mobility is required, but these are walking experiences, not technical hikes. We take regular breaks and move at a considered pace. If you’re unsure whether a walk is suitable for you, please get in touch before booking. your content...
What should I bring?
Comfort is key on any ECOTRAILS adventure. Wear walking shoes or boots with good grip and pack a lightweight waterproof jacket—New Zealand weather can shift quickly. We provide lunch, snacks and tea/coffee (included in the price), but you’re welcome to bring extra supplies and a small lightweight backpack to hold your things in.
Comfortable walking shoes
Weather-appropriate clothing
A warm layer and rain jacket
Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
Mosquito repellent
A refillable water bottle
A camera or phone for photos
A full “what to bring” list is included in your confirmation email.
What if the weather changes suddenly?
We operate in a range of weather conditions, as this is part of experiencing the landscape.
Our guides always check forecasts, and we prepare the group accordingly—carrying spare layers and adapting the walk if needed.
If conditions are unsafe or significantly impact the experience, we’ll be in touch to reschedule, refund or discuss alternatives.
Do we reach a summit or the top of the track?
Enter No. ECOTRAILS walks are not focused on reaching summits or ticking off milestones. Our priority is the quality of the journey — observing the landscape, understanding the environment, and enjoying a well-paced day outdoors. content...
Are your eco tours suitable for families?
The walk is suitable for children 12 years old or over (due to the distance, altitue and length of the day), and we take care to keep the route interesting for young explorers, allowing them to search for animal tracks, listen for birds, and learn fun facts. If you have any concerns please email us prior to booking.
Is food included?
Yes. On full-day walks, lunch is prepared in advance through a trusted local café and enjoyed outdoors as part of the journey. Dietary requirements must be provided at the time of booking.
On half-day walks, teas/coffees and light snacks (fruit and granola bars) are provided.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes — dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for when provided at the time of booking. Please ensure this information is included so arrangements can be made in advance.

How safe are ECOTRAILS walks?
Our guiding style is preventative rather than reactive.
We operate small groups so every guest can be supervised properly, and we adjust plans early if conditions, terrain, or comfort levels change. Turning around, shortening the walk, or pausing is considered a normal part of guiding — not a failure.
We don’t aim to complete a fixed itinerary at all costs.
The experience adapts to the day, never the other way around.
Guides continuously monitor weather, track conditions, and guest wellbeing. Emergency equipment is carried, however rescue services are treated as a last resort rather than part of the plan.
The goal is simple: a calm, comfortable experience that never becomes a survival situation.
