WEATHER & CONDITIONS POLICY
New Zealand Weather
New Zealand’s mountain and lake environments are dynamic. Conditions can change quickly and forecasts are not always exact.
A light rain shower, wind, or cool temperatures are a normal part of experiencing nature here and do not automatically make a trip unsafe.
Our experiences are designed to operate in a wide range of conditions — this is part of an authentic outdoor experience.
Our Decision Process
Before every trip we assess:
MetService forecasts and trend changes.
Localised mountain weather.
Wind strength and direction.
Temperature and exposure risk.
Track conditions.
Group ability and preparedness.
The guide in charge, makes the final decision based on safety and comfort.
Safety always takes priority over completing a planned route.
When Trips Continue
Trips normally proceed in:
Light rain or passing showers.
Cool temperatures.
Cloud cover or limited views.
Moderate wind.
Typical alpine conditions.
We recommend bringing appropriate clothing so you remain comfortable.
When We Modify or Change the Plan
We may adjust the route, shorten the walk, relocate, or alter timing if conditions require.
This still counts as the experience purchased — the environment determines the exact journey each day.
When We Cancel
We cancel only when conditions create elevated risk, including:
Severe weather warnings.
Dangerous wind speeds.
Heavy persistent rain causing track hazards.
Flooded or unsafe terrain.
Conditions the guide determines unsafe.
Refunds & Alternatives
If ECOTRAILS cancels before departure due to unsafe conditions, guests may choose:
Full refund.
Reschedule (subject to availability).
Alternative experience (if suitable).
Guest Choice
If the trip proceeds and a guest chooses not to attend due to personal preference about weather, standard cancellation terms apply.
Outdoor experiences require a degree of weather acceptance.
Our Philosophy
We would rather disappoint a day than risk a person.
You can trust that if we go ahead, the experience is considered safe and enjoyable.
