The sub-alpine - where survival begins
As the trees thin, life changes strategy.
Shrubs grow sideways instead of upward. Leaves become small, waxy, or leathery.
Here, plants prepare for frost in every season.
Insects appear briefly during warm windows, and birds follow them. Pollination happens fast. Growth happens slowly. A single step off the formed track can undo decades of growth.
This is where we begin to walk more carefully.
